Townspeople Invited to Hear Dr. Ralph Chaney Speak On "Tracing True History of Dinosaurs and Man in Mongolia".
Dr. Ralph Works Chaney was a member of the Third Asiatic Expedition to Mongolia headed by Roy Chapman Andrews, later to become the Director of the American Museum of Natural History.
Not a lot has been made by science or archaeologists that the Chapman team found evidence of man and dinosaur in close association, including the finding of the implements of man in the same strata as dinosaur fossils.
A great deal was made of their discovery of many dinosaur eggs, along with the discovery of ostrich eggs both of which had been “bored out’ and turned into jewelry.
It is probably worth noting that neither the ostrich eggs nor the dinosaur eggshells were drilled and turned into beads for necklaces once they had become fossilized. This jewelry making took place while both types of eggs were fresh.
What did Dr. Ralph Chaney say about man and dinosaur in his lecture to faculty, students and townspeople? I don’t know. Did he call them together to say that “man and dinosaur never co-existed”?
Possibly.
That might have made for a boring lecture given the promise of the lecture title.
There was probably a lot of pressure to stay with the paradigm. One way Roy Andrews dealt with it was to assert that the “dune dwellers” were “primitive men”.
Here however, is what Dr. Chaney noted in an article in the American Forest Magazine in 1926.
"The expedition took place beginning in 1921. Dr. Chaney was sent by the Carnegie Institution to accompany the Third Asiatic Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History, and his especial field of investigation was the fossil plant remains found in the same sands with the dinosaur eggs and with the flint implements of the early human inhabitants”. Townspeople Invited to Hear Dr. Ralph Chaney Speak On "Tracing True History of Dinosaurs and Man in Mongolia"
“A program of unusual interest has been arranged for the next meeting of the College Science club, to be held next Thursday evening at seven-thirty in the classroom of the chemistry building.
Dr. Ralph W. Chaney, paleontologist of the Carnegie Institute of Washington will give an illustrated lecture on "Tracing the History of Dinosaurs and Man in Mongolia”.
Dr. Chaney was a member of the Third Asiatic Expedition to Mongolia, made under the joint auspices of The American Museum of Natural History and the magazine "Asia."
This expedition was led by Roy Chapman Andrews, who has written several very interesting articles on the explorations in "Asia" and in the "Worlds Work."
At present Dr. Chaney is stationed by the Carnegie Institution at Berkeley, Calif., where he is engaged in studying the plant fossils of the western coast.
Dr. Chaney is a member of the Society of Sigma. Xi, holds the Ph. D. degree from the University of Chicago, and has had a very rich experience in his chosen field of research.
He is a brother of Professor Margaret Chaney of the Home Economics Division at the college, and it is through the kind cooperation of Miss Chaney that the Science Club and the Sigma Xi club of K. S. A. C. are able to offer this rare opportunity to hear of the fine work of the Roy Chapman Andrews expedition to far off Mongolia.
Faculty, students and townspeople are cordially invited to the meeting, and are urged to come on time, as a good many people were turned away from a recent meeting when a similar program of unusual general interest was given.”
